Kennedy Agyapong Declines Bawumia’s Co-Chair Appointment Over “Personal and Strategic Reasons”

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has formally declined an appointment offered to him by Mahamudu Bawumia to serve as Co-Chair of the NPP’s newly constituted policy committees.

In a letter dated May 8, 2026, Mr Agyapong expressed appreciation to Dr Bawumia for the confidence reposed in him but said he was unable to accept the role at this time.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the confidence you have reposed in me by considering me for the position of Co-Chair,” portions of the letter stated.

However, the former presidential aspirant explained that his decision was based on “personal and strategic reasons” that currently require his “full attention and commitment elsewhere.”

“After careful consideration, I regret to respectfully decline the appointment at this time,” he wrote.

Despite turning down the offer, Kennedy Agyapong reaffirmed his commitment to the New Patriotic Party and its broader vision ahead of the next general election.

“I remain committed to the progress and unity of our party and will continue to support every genuine effort aimed at strengthening our collective vision for Ghana,” he added.

The appointment formed part of a broader move by Dr Bawumia to unite key figures within the party by assigning major roles to his former rivals in the NPP flagbearer race. Kennedy Agyapong’s rejection, however, is likely to fuel fresh political discussions within the party’s ranks.
