Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken legal action against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over statements he says are false and defamatory.
The Effutu MP disclosed the development when Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026, following weeks of public exchanges between the two over GoldBod’s operations and reported losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The dispute intensified after Mr Gyamfi described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” in response to the Minority Leader’s demands for accountability over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025 under the programme.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he has since initiated legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi, as well as media organisations that published or broadcast the statements.
He cited two cases: Suit Number GT/1029/2026, filed at the Accra High Court against Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, filed at the Achimota Circuit Court against Eric Adjei and Peace FM.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” Mr Afenyo-Markin told Parliament.
The legal action follows a prolonged disagreement over the financial performance of the DGPP and whether GoldBod was responsible for the reported losses.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly called on the government and GoldBod to explain the reported losses, while Mr Gyamfi has rejected claims that GoldBod incurred the losses.
Mr Gyamfi has also maintained that he is prepared to defend his statements in court.
