Majority Leader and Chairman of Parliament’s Business Committee, Mahama Ayariga, is set to appear before the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, August 25, for vetting as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Mr Ayariga is among three nominees scheduled to appear before the committee as Parliament begins consideration of recent presidential nominations to key ministerial and judicial positions.
Also appearing before the committee on Tuesday is Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who has been nominated as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology. A nominee for appointment to the Supreme Court will also be vetted.
The timetable was announced by Mr Ayariga during proceedings in Parliament on Monday, August 24, as the Business Committee outlined the schedule for the vetting exercise.
He said the committee would consider the two ministerial nominees and one Supreme Court nominee on Tuesday, before vetting two additional Supreme Court nominees on Wednesday, August 26.
Mr Ayariga’s appearance will allow the committee to examine his qualifications, experience, policy positions and suitability for the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs portfolio.
The vetting forms part of Parliament’s process of considering several nominations submitted by President John Dramani Mahama for approval.
The process follows a request by the Business Committee for a waiver of the Standing Orders requirement on the publication of presidential nominations. The waiver is intended to facilitate the consideration of the nominations and allow the committee to proceed with the vetting schedule.
After the vetting, the committee will prepare reports on the nominees for presentation to the full House, which will then consider and vote on their approval in accordance with parliamentary procedures.
