Ghana and Belarus Strengthen Ties with Signing of Three Key Cooperation Agreements

President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus as part of his state visit to the Eastern European country, with both leaders committing to deepen cooperation between their nations.

The engagement began with a tête-à-tête meeting between the two presidents, followed by expanded discussions between their respective delegations. The talks focused on strengthening collaboration across key sectors of their economies, with emphasis on practical partnerships that can deliver mutual benefits.

The visit concluded with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), marking a significant step forward in Ghana-Belarus relations. The agreements establish a Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, enhance collaboration between the Chambers of Commerce of both countries, and promote increased cooperation in agriculture.

The MoUs on behalf of Ghana were signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Jehu Appiah, and the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku.

Speaking at a joint press conference after the talks, President Mahama described the visit as an important milestone in strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Ghana and Belarus. He stressed that both countries share a commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, equality, and practical results.

He further highlighted agriculture as a key pillar of Ghana’s development agenda, noting Belarus as a strategic partner in the country’s efforts to modernise the sector. According to him, areas such as mechanisation, technology transfer, research, and investment present strong opportunities for collaboration.

President Mahama also pointed to additional sectors including education, renewable energy, trade, and industry as areas where both countries can expand cooperation to support sustainable economic growth.

He added that the newly signed agreements will provide a structured framework for engagement between public institutions and the private sectors of both countries, helping to unlock investment opportunities, encourage innovation, and create jobs.

The President expressed optimism that the outcomes of the visit will usher in a new phase in Ghana-Belarus relations, translating diplomatic commitments into tangible projects that benefit citizens of both nations.
