Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to a remarkable 20-year journey with the national team.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, Messi said the decision was painful but one he felt was necessary as “the time has come” to step away.
“It was a decision that hurt and hurts deep in the soul, but I understand that it is the right moment.”
The 2022 World Cup-winning captain said he gave everything for the Argentina shirt throughout his career, not only during the years when the team enjoyed major success but also during the difficult periods.
“I always fought and gave everything for this shirt, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”
Messi said he was leaving with nothing more to give and was ready to make way for the next generation of Argentine stars.
“I poured everything out, I have no more left to give, and besides, incredible young players are coming behind who deserve to be here.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner thanked his family, coaches, teammates, football administrators and Argentine fans for standing by him throughout his international career.
Although he is retiring from the pitch, Messi said his love for Argentina will remain unchanged, promising to continue supporting the national team as a fan.
“I am going to miss hearing you from the inside very much. Now I am going to be one more of you, cheering and supporting always from the outside.”
Reflecting on the journey, Messi said he leaves with pride and peace, having shared unforgettable moments and achieved dreams alongside his teammates.
“I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you, together with my teammates, dream moments. It was crazy to have lived it with you. I love you!”
