Five people are feared dead, while several others have sustained serious injuries after a tipper truck collided with a Sprinter bus at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The crash left the Sprinter bus severely mangled, trapping several passengers inside and prompting an urgent rescue operation by emergency responders.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), officers were deployed to the scene to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage and assist those who survived the crash.
Five people have so far been confirmed dead, while several others were injured and rushed for medical attention.
The force of the collision reportedly left some victims with severe injuries. One female victim, whose legs were reportedly severed in the crash, was transported from the scene by ambulance.
The GNFS described the situation as volatile as its personnel worked to safely extricate victims from the wreckage and bring the rescue operation under control.
At the time of reporting, rescue operations were still ongoing, and the full extent of the casualties had yet to be established.
The accident has also disrupted traffic on the highway, with movement on the affected stretch temporarily restricted to allow emergency responders to work.
The GNFS has advised motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane and approach the area with extreme caution.
Motorists have also been urged to give way to emergency vehicles and remain alert as rescue teams continue working to clear the wreckage and assist victims.
