President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reviewing the Customs Act to protect incentives for businesses operating under the Free Zones Scheme, safeguard investments and strengthen investor confidence.
He gave the assurance during a tour of Dignity DTRT, a Ghanaian-owned garment manufacturing company operating under the scheme, as the government pursues its industrialisation and 24-Hour Economy agenda.
The company is preparing to commission a new manufacturing facility expected to create more than 15,000 jobs and operate around the clock. The expansion is expected to increase Ghana’s garment production capacity, boost exports and create employment opportunities.
President Mahama said reviewing the Customs Act was necessary to protect the incentives available to Free Zones businesses and provide a supportive environment for investment and industrial growth.
“Government is committed to reviewing the Customs Act to protect Free Zones incentives, safeguard investments and strengthen investor confidence,” he said.
He added that the company’s expansion demonstrated the contribution of Ghanaian entrepreneurship and domestic investment to industrial development and efforts to establish Ghana as a competitive manufacturing and export hub.
The President was accompanied on the visit by the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi.
