Ato Forson Calls for Break from Old Economic Patterns to Secure Ghana’s Future

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has called for a fundamental shift in Ghana’s economic approach, urging the country to move beyond stabilisation and pursue structural reforms that will deliver lasting prosperity.

Speaking during his New Economy engagement with faculty and students at the University of Ghana, Dr Forson said the country must address the underlying causes of its economic challenges and adopt policies that support long-term growth.

“We have stabilised the present. Now we must secure the future,” he said.

The Finance Minister stressed that Ghana had reached a critical point where bold policy decisions were needed to break away from economic practices that had held the country back.

“History does not wait for countries that are afraid to decide,” he said.

“There are moments when a nation must make a clear break with old patterns. There are moments when public policy must stop managing symptoms and start changing structures. This is such a moment for Ghana.”

Dr Forson said the next phase of the country’s economic development must focus on transforming the structure of the economy to improve productivity, create decent jobs and raise incomes.

He presented the New Economy agenda as a pathway to building on the gains made in economic stabilisation and creating a stronger foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity for future generations.
