Dr Bawumia Unites NPP Rivals With Key Policy Committee Appointments Ahead of 2028 Race

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has moved to strengthen party unity by appointing all four of his former presidential primary rivals as co-chairmen of newly created policy committees within the party.

The appointments, announced as part of a broader restructuring of the NPP’s policy framework, are being viewed by political observers as a strong signal that the party is putting internal competition behind it and shifting focus toward rebuilding ahead of the next general election.

The new structure is designed to position the NPP as a policy-driven opposition party capable of presenting alternative solutions to national issues. According to the flagbearer’s office, the committees will focus on producing practical and evidence-based policy proposals across key sectors of the economy and governance.

At the centre of the framework is the NPP Policy Committee, which will be chaired by former Information and Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah. Dr Kwasi Nyame Baafi has been named Secretary to the Committee and is expected to provide technical and administrative leadership.

Under the arrangement, several sector-specific committees have been established to cover areas including education, employment, energy, health, local governance, transport, security, housing, and the economy.

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, a role many believe aligns with his long-standing advocacy for entrepreneurship and private sector growth.

Former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong will serve as Co-Chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, where he is expected to contribute to discussions around Ghana’s growing housing deficit and urban expansion challenges.

Former Agriculture and Interior Minister Bryan Acheampong has been tasked with co-chairing the Defence and Interior Policy Committee, bringing his experience in national security and governance to the role.

Meanwhile, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has been named Co-Chairman of the Education Policy Committee, an area where he is widely recognised for championing reforms and innovation during his time in office.

The appointments are widely being interpreted as a deliberate attempt by Dr Bawumia to unify the party’s top figures after a competitive presidential primary contest in January 2026.

Beyond party unity, the move also signals the NPP’s intention to transition from what critics describe as reactive opposition politics to a more policy-oriented and governance-focused approach.

Officials close to the flagbearer say Dr Bawumia wants the NPP to consistently present credible alternatives on national issues and demonstrate readiness for government long before the next election campaign officially begins.
