Black Stars Set for Over $12.5m FIFA Windfall Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Ghana’s return to the FIFA World Cup is already proving financially rewarding, with the Black Stars set to earn more than $12.5 million in guaranteed funding and bonuses ahead of the 2026 tournament.

FIFA has announced a major increase in prize money for the expanded World Cup, confirming that nearly $900 million will be shared among the 48 participating nations. The total prize pool for the tournament has risen to $871 million following a 15 percent increase fueled by stronger commercial revenue.

The decision was approved during a FIFA Council meeting held in Vancouver on April 28, ahead of next year’s tournament.

Under the new arrangement, every qualified country will receive increased financial support from football’s world governing body. For Ghana, qualification alone guarantees a $10 million participation bonus, in addition to $2.5 million in preparation funding. This marks an increase from the $1.5 million provided in previous tournaments.

FIFA will also provide extra financial support estimated at more than $16 million to help participating countries cover travel, logistics, accommodation, and ticketing costs for their delegations during the competition.

The financial package is expected to significantly ease the burden on the Ghana Football Association as preparations intensify for the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Beyond tournament preparations, the funding is also expected to strengthen Ghana football in the long term. Experts believe the additional resources could improve player welfare, technical preparation, scouting, and youth development initiatives.

FIFA’s continued commitment to redistributing football revenue among its 211 member associations is also likely to benefit grassroots football and infrastructure development across Ghana.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first edition to feature 48 teams, expanding opportunities for countries across Africa and other regions to compete on football’s biggest stage.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the organisation’s strong financial position has made it possible to reinvest more resources into football development worldwide, a move expected to benefit participating nations including Ghana.
