Flooding is a National Crisis, Not a Political Issue — Dr Bawumia Calls for Collective Action

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged Ghanaians to unite in addressing the recurring flooding that continues to affect parts of Accra whenever heavy rains occur.

Speaking on Tuesday, June 30, after touring some of the communities affected by Monday’s devastating floods, the former Vice President described flooding as a national challenge that requires a collective and non-partisan approach to solve.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the country must harness the expertise of engineers, hydrologists and other professionals to find lasting solutions to the persistent problem.

“All our energies, all our talents, all the engineers, all the hydrologists, we have to bring everybody together, regardless of party, because this is for Ghana. Let us come together for Ghana and solve this problem for our country,” he said.

He stressed that flooding should not be viewed through a political lens but as a shared national concern that affects lives, livelihoods and development.

Beyond long-term solutions, Dr. Bawumia also appealed to Ghanaians to support victims of the floods, many of whom have lost their homes, belongings and sources of livelihood.

“I want to ask everybody, let’s do this together, and let’s provide immediate relief to the people who are affected. People need food, people don’t have clothes, people don’t have mattresses. Let us make sure that we come immediately to their aid,” he stated.

The NPP flagbearer encouraged individuals, businesses, organisations and community groups to contribute whatever support they can to assist affected families.

“Everybody should do something. Myself, I will try and help in the small way I can with some of these relief items. Our people and communities are in need, and we should all chip in and help them,” he added.

The appeal comes after heavy rains on Monday, June 29, triggered widespread flooding across several parts of the Greater Accra Region, leading to loss of lives, displacement of residents, destruction of property and a fire outbreak in the Odawna area.
