President Mahama Releases GH¢300m Emergency Fund for Flood Relief

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and mitigation efforts after severe flooding hit parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana on Monday, June 29.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, June 30, comes in response to hours of intense rainfall that left several communities submerged, disrupting homes, businesses and key infrastructure.

According to a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the amount will be split into two equal parts. GH¢150 million has been allocated for immediate relief to affected individuals and communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will go into flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing future incidents in vulnerable areas.

As part of the response, the President has also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to assist the National Disaster Management Organisation and other agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Mahama undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas to assess the scale of destruction first-hand and to guide government’s emergency response actions.

Government says the funding is expected to speed up relief delivery while also supporting longer-term efforts to address Ghana’s recurring flood challenges.
