38,802 people affected, 7 missing after devastating Accra floods — Interior Minister Reveal

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that a total of 38,802 people from 7,761 households were affected by the devastating floods that swept through parts of the Greater Accra Region following Monday’s heavy rains.

Presenting a statement in Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, the Minister said the floods impacted 25 communities across 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), disrupting livelihoods, damaging property and forcing thousands of residents from their homes.

According to him, seven people remain missing while several deaths have been recorded in some of the hardest-hit areas.

Muntaka explained that Ga East was among the worst-affected assemblies, recording 2,000 displaced persons from 400 households. The area also reported six missing persons and five deaths.

In Ledzokuku, 1,200 people from 240 households were displaced, with one death recorded. Ayawaso Central recorded 3,021 displaced persons from 605 households, alongside one missing person and three deaths.

Other affected assemblies included Ga Central, which recorded 1,811 displaced persons from 363 households, and Ga West, where 2,300 people from 460 households were displaced. Neither assembly reported any deaths or missing persons.

The Minister further revealed that Ablekuma North recorded 651 displaced persons from 131 households, while Weija-Gbawe and Ga South recorded 2,500 and 2,100 displaced persons respectively.

Adenta registered 1,850 displaced persons from 370 households, Krowor recorded 6,500 displaced persons from 1,300 households, while Okaikwei South and Okaikwei North recorded 701 and 2,620 displaced persons respectively.

In Tema West, 3,450 people from 690 households were displaced and three fatalities were recorded. Tema Metropolitan Assembly recorded 3,601 displaced persons from 721 households, while La Dade-Kotopon recorded 2,020 displaced persons from 404 households.

Kpone-Katamanso also recorded 1,100 displaced persons from 220 households but reported no deaths.

Summing up the impact of the disaster, Muntaka told Parliament that 7,761 households had been displaced, affecting 38,802 individuals across the Greater Accra Region.

The latest figures come as emergency response teams continue rescue, relief and recovery efforts in affected communities, while authorities assess the full extent of the damage caused by the floods.
