Hundreds of commuters have been stranded after severe flooding cut off the main Winneba–Cape Coast highway, bringing movement along one of the country’s busiest road corridors to a halt.
Rising floodwaters submerged sections of the highway on Monday, making it impossible for vehicles and pedestrians to cross safely. The situation left travellers on both sides of the affected stretch stranded as they waited for water levels to recede.
The disruption has caused major traffic congestion and travel delays, with motorists forced to suspend their journeys due to the dangerous conditions. Commercial drivers, passengers and traders who rely on the route have all been affected by the flooding.
The highway serves as a critical link between communities in the Central Region and other parts of the country, making the interruption a significant challenge for transportation and economic activities.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned that the rains are not yet over. According to its latest forecast, rainfall is expected to continue until the afternoon of Monday, June 29.
Weather officials have also indicated that another rain system moving from the Benin–Togo coastal corridor could bring additional rainfall to parts of southern Ghana, raising concerns that flooding may worsen in some areas.
Authorities are urging motorists and residents in flood-prone communities to exercise caution and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads as the weather situation continues to develop.
