A joint task force made up of the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly has begun a three-day demolition exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar Site, targeting unauthorised structures built within the Golf Course enclave.
The operation, which commenced today, Tuesday, May 5, is part of renewed efforts to restore blocked waterways and reduce the growing risk of flooding as the rainy season sets in.
Authorities say illegal developments on key drainage paths have severely disrupted the natural flow of water, worsening flood conditions in nearby communities. The exercise, they stress, is not a sudden move but a continuation of longstanding enforcement actions aimed at safeguarding the ecologically sensitive area.
Despite several warnings, eviction notices, and previous demolitions, encroachment on the Ramsar site has persisted, forcing authorities to take a firmer and more coordinated approach.
The Sakumo Ramsar Site, recognised internationally for its ecological value, continues to face pressure from human activities particularly unregulated construction. Officials warn that the disregard for planning regulations not only threatens the environment but also exposes residents to significant danger during heavy rains.
Security personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order throughout the exercise. Meanwhile, affected property owners are being advised to cooperate with authorities to ensure a smooth and incident-free operation.
