The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has temporarily suspended registration for its ongoing voluntary evacuation programme after receiving more than 1,500 applications.
In a statement issued on June 1, 2026, the mission explained that the pause, which takes effect from Tuesday, June 2, is to allow authorities to properly process and verify all submitted applications.
According to the High Commission, the large volume of registrations requires careful screening in collaboration with relevant South African Home Affairs authorities to ensure the exercise is well coordinated and transparent.
Officials stressed that the suspension is only temporary and does not signal the end of the evacuation process. They assured Ghanaians in South Africa who have not yet registered that another registration phase will be opened after the current applications have been fully assessed.
“The date of the next phase for new registration will be communicated in due course,” the statement noted, adding that the repatriation exercise is still ongoing.
The mission also expressed appreciation to members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa for their cooperation and patience, saying their support has been key to the smooth management of the programme.
The evacuation exercise continues as Ghanaian authorities work to ensure proper documentation, verification, and orderly relocation of affected citizens.
