The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to become one of President John Dramani Mahama’s major legacy projects in Ghana’s road sector, according to Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza.
The minister’s comments come after the Ghana Armed Forces completed the clearing of the right-of-way along the entire corridor earmarked for the project.
With the corridor now cleared, government is expected to move to the next stages, including the completion of detailed designs and the procurement of contractors for the construction of the expressway.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr Agbodza described the project as a “generational intervention” that could leave a lasting mark on Ghana’s infrastructure development.
He said President Mahama wants the project to be among the major developments of the current generation, just as earlier leaders left behind landmark infrastructure.
“Dr Nkrumah and others did other things: they did the Tema Motorway, they did the port, and other things. We also must do something to hold our place in history on behalf of our people,” he said.
Mr Agbodza noted that the completion of the right-of-way clearing represents a significant step towards making the expressway a reality.
He said government will now concentrate on finalising the design and procurement processes before construction begins.
If completed, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to transform travel between the country’s two major economic centres and provide a major upgrade to Ghana’s road network.
