GAUA Demands Restoration of 114% Market Premium Before Ending Strike

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) says it will consider calling off its ongoing strike after receiving a formal response to its demand for the restoration of its market premium to 114 per cent of basic salary.

National President of GAUA, Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah, said the market premium for university administrators and senior members had fallen from 114 per cent of their basic salaries in 2012 to less than 25 per cent currently.

He also noted that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) had been tasked with addressing disparities under the Single Spine Salary Structure.

The development follows a meeting between GAUA and the Ministry of Education on Monday, October 12, 2026, during which Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu appealed to the association to call off the strike by the weekend.

The minister assured the association of the government’s commitment to addressing its concerns and said he would direct the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to engage university managements to resolve the outstanding issues.

However, GAUA’s position indicates that a formal response to its demand for the restoration of the 114 per cent market premium remains central to any decision to end the industrial action.
