DVLA Introduces Six Ghanaian Languages for Computer-Based Driving Tests

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced six Ghanaian languages into its computer-based driving tests to make the licensing process more accessible to applicants who have difficulty reading or understanding English.

DVLA Chief Executive Julius Neequaye Kotey announced the initiative at the Accountability Series on Monday, October 12, 2026. He said the new translation software would help applicants demonstrate their understanding of road safety and traffic regulations without language barriers.

The languages currently available are Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Nzema and Hausa. According to Mr Kotey, the Authority is working to expand the platform to accommodate additional local languages.

He explained that the computer-based testing (CBT) platform was developed to support applicants who cannot read or write in English, allowing them to take the mandatory driving tests in a language they understand.

The initiative is expected to help applicants better understand road signs, traffic rules and safe driving practices before obtaining their licences.

Beyond the language support, the DVLA has introduced an SMS notification system to remind licence holders when their licences are due for renewal or replacement.

The system sends the first reminder one month before a licence expires, followed by a second notification two weeks before the expiry date. To receive the alerts, licence holders must ensure that the mobile number linked to their application remains unchanged.

The Authority is also developing a similar notification system for vehicle roadworthiness certificates to alert vehicle owners ahead of their renewal deadlines.

Additionally, the DVLA is introducing electronic libraries at its offices where clients can watch refresher courses and road safety videos aimed at improving driving skills and promoting responsible behaviour on the road.

The measures form part of the Authority’s efforts to improve access to its services, make licence renewal more convenient and strengthen road safety education among motorists.
