Mahama Swears In Two New Deputy Electoral Commission Chairpersons

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC), filling two vacancies in the Commission’s leadership.

At a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 12, President Mahama urged the new appointees to uphold fairness, exercise restraint and remain faithful to the law in the discharge of their duties.

He stressed that the Electoral Commission must operate independently and apply the same standards to all political parties and individuals, including the President and his government.

“As president, I expect no preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission for myself, my party, or my government. I expect an institution that applies the same standards to everyone and protects Ghanaians’ right to choose their leaders freely,” he said.

The appointments follow the departure of two former deputy chairpersons. Dr Bossman Eric Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs, resigned effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia at the University of Ghana. Samuel Tettey, who oversaw Operations, also left the Commission after reaching the mandatory retirement age.

Dr Asamoah is a lawyer, chartered accountant and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He brings more than 17 years of experience in electoral administration, public service, legal practice and academia.

The new appointments are expected to strengthen the leadership of the Electoral Commission as it carries out its constitutional mandate of overseeing elections and safeguarding the democratic rights of Ghanaians.
