A fire has swept through sections of the Makola Market in Accra, destroying several shops and consuming goods worth thousands of cedis.
The blaze reportedly broke out on Wednesday and spread rapidly through parts of the busy commercial centre. Thick smoke was seen rising from the market as traders and shoppers rushed out of the area to avoid the advancing flames.
Several trading stores and merchandise belonging to business owners were completely destroyed, leaving affected traders counting their losses. Although the exact extent of the damage is yet to be confirmed, early reports suggest significant destruction in the affected sections.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service quickly arrived at the scene and are working to bring the fire under control while preventing it from spreading to nearby shops and structures.
Authorities are expected to begin investigations into the cause of the fire once the situation is fully contained.
