Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is expected to meet the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) this week as government steps up efforts to resolve the association’s ongoing strike.
GAUA is protesting what it describes as disparities in Market Premium and other related allowances between teaching and non-teaching senior members of public universities.
The Education Minister’s spokesperson, Hashmin Mohammed, told Citi News that the Minister will engage GAUA together with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to find a lasting solution to the dispute.
“I think that meeting should happen sometime this week so that we can find a solution to this issue,” he said.
However, GAUA says it expects concrete action from government rather than further assurances.
The President of the University of Ghana chapter of GAUA, Michael Owusu Ansah, said the association would not suspend its industrial action based solely on promises, stressing that previous engagements had not produced the desired results.
He said government must demonstrate a clear commitment to addressing the concerns of tertiary staff unions.
“If it is going to be ‘trust me and give me time and I will come back to you,’ I’m afraid this time GAUA may not be persuaded by words,” he said.
The planned meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to address the outstanding concerns and seek a resolution to the strike.
