Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has assured that Ghana’s Defence Ministry remains stable and fully functional, despite the continued absence of a substantive Defence Minister months after President John Mahama indicated that an appointment would be made.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, he maintained that the operations of the ministry and the country’s broader defence system have not been negatively affected by the vacancy.
Host Evans Mensah reminded him that the President had earlier suggested a Defence Minister would be named after the Christmas period, but no such appointment has yet been announced.
Responding to the concern, Mr Kwakye Ofosu stressed that the decision to appoint a minister lies solely with the President, and would be communicated when the time is right.
He further noted that government business continues without disruption.
“In terms of Ghana’s defence architecture, there have been no lapses as far as I know. We have held the fort and government has functioned effectively,” he said.
He added that ongoing efforts such as military retooling and equipment procurement are progressing well, suggesting that the sector is even seeing improvements.
According to him, the current arrangement may also be helping to streamline processes, especially since the Finance Minister is reportedly overseeing the ministry in an acting capacity.
Pressed on concerns about the prolonged delay in appointing a substantive minister, he dismissed suggestions of instability and insisted that the ministry remains in experienced hands.
“So what is the exact problem at the Defence Ministry?” he asked during the interview.
He reiterated that there is no cause for alarm, adding that the President will make an appointment when he deems it necessary.
“As of when the President deems it necessary to do so, he would do so,” he stated.
