President John Dramani Mahama is expected to chair a special Cabinet meeting today, Thursday, May 14, to deliberate on recommendations submitted by the Constitutional Review Committee as government prepares to take a major decision on proposed constitutional reforms.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that a draft position paper has already been prepared following an extensive review by the Attorney General and the President’s legal team.
According to him, President Mahama had earlier directed that the committee’s report be carefully studied to help shape government’s official response to the proposals emerging from the constitutional review process.
Speaking on Joy News, Hon. Kwakye Ofosu said the review work has now been completed, paving the way for Cabinet to determine government’s final position on the recommendations.
“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” he stated.
He explained that the outcome of the meeting will form the basis of government’s official response to the constitutional review proposals, adding that the approved position paper will later be made public to keep citizens informed.
Hon.Kwakye Ofosu noted that unlike a commission of inquiry, which requires a white paper, the constitutional review process demands a position paper from government.
He further indicated that although other national matters may come before Cabinet, the constitutional review report remains the central focus of the meeting.
According to him, once Cabinet approves the document, government will proceed with the next phase of implementation, including the establishment of an implementation committee.
He added that the recommendations would be examined individually, with some likely to be accepted, others modified, while some may be rejected depending on feasibility and other considerations.
Government, he said, will continue public engagement after Cabinet concludes its deliberations on the report.
