Gov’t Secures Over 24,000 Medical Equipment Units Ahead of Free Primary Healthcare Rollout

The government has taken a major step toward the implementation of its Free Primary Healthcare policy, announcing the procurement of 24,534 pieces of medical equipment to support the initiative.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh revealed that the equipment is ready for deployment across the country. According to him, the move is aimed at ensuring health facilities are adequately prepared ahead of the policy’s rollout.

He explained that the investment forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s primary healthcare system by equipping frontline facilities and health workers with the necessary tools.

“Our goal is to make sure that facilities and personnel are fully prepared to deliver quality care when the policy takes off,” he stated.

The minister noted that priority will be given to Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and polyclinics, which are expected to serve as the first point of care under the new system.

Despite the announcement, further details regarding the exact types of equipment, distribution strategy, and delivery timelines are yet to be disclosed.

The Free Primary Healthcare policy is expected to be officially launched by President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days. Its initial phase will cover 150 districts, with plans to expand nationwide by 2028.
