United Party leader Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has acknowledged the progress made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in stabilising Ghana’s economy but says the real test will be whether the gains can be sustained over time.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, September 21, Mr Kyerematen said the government had generally performed well in managing the macroeconomy, particularly in restoring stability to key economic indicators.
“If you ask me about my own assessment of what the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama have done, I would say, generally, they have done well, particularly stabilising the macroeconomy,” he said.
However, he cautioned against viewing short-term economic improvements as the final measure of success, stressing that maintaining the gains over the long term would be a more important test of the government’s economic management.
“The question we need to ask is whether they can sustain the progress that has been made,” he said.
According to Mr Kyerematen, economic success is important, but its true value lies in the ability of a government to put in place policies and systems that can preserve stability beyond the immediate period.
“Success is good and is very important but the real litmus test of success is when you are able to sustain it,” he added.
He therefore urged a focus on whether the current economic improvements can be maintained through sound policies and effective systems rather than being measured solely by immediate changes in macroeconomic indicators.
