May 27 Declared Public Holiday for Eid-Ul-Adha — Interior Ministry

The Ministry for the Interior has officially declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as a statutory public holiday across Ghana in observance of Eid-Ul-Adha.

The announcement was shared in a statement issued on Friday, May 15, and signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. The ministry urged the general public to observe the day as a national holiday throughout the country.

According to the statement, “Wednesday, 27th May 2026, marks Eid-Ul-Adha, which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

Eid-Ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar. The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to obey God’s command through sacrifice, symbolising faith, obedience, and devotion.

Muslims across Ghana and around the world traditionally mark the occasion with special congregational prayers, charitable acts, and the sacrifice of livestock, with portions shared among family members, neighbours, and the less privileged.

The celebration also promotes values of compassion, generosity, and unity, as families and communities come together to observe the sacred occasion.
