Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has pledged a special cash reward for the Black Stars following their impressive performances at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
The founder of Engineers and Planners made the announcement during a visit to the team’s camp in Rhode Island on Thursday, June 25, where he met players and members of the technical team ahead of Ghana’s final group-stage match against Croatia on Saturday, June 27.
Addressing the squad, Ibrahim Mahama praised the players for their determination, discipline and resilience, saying their performances had convinced him to honour a financial commitment he had previously held back until they proved themselves on the field.
“I was holding money back even when I pledged and I told the minister that I won’t give you the money until I see some good performance. But now I want to rush home and give him all the money,” he said.
His pledge adds to the growing support the Black Stars have received from individuals and corporate organisations since the start of the tournament.
Ibrahim Mahama also commended head coach Carlos Queiroz for the impact he has made since taking charge of the national team just weeks before the World Cup.
“With the coach, I am very, very proud because you came in within a short time and have been able to bring the boys together. Your performance has been wonderful,” he stated.
Earlier this year, Ibrahim Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s World Cup campaign when Engineers and Planners donated $5 million during a national fundraising drive launched to support the country’s participation at the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
With Ghana already producing encouraging performances on the world stage, Ibrahim Mahama expressed confidence that the Black Stars can continue their impressive run and make the nation proud.
