Ghana, Netherlands Deepen Cooperation to Fight Illicit Drug Trade

Ghana and the Netherlands have strengthened their partnership in the fight against illicit drugs following the signing of a special Letter of Intent aimed at tackling drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

The agreement was signed by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Netherlands’ Minister of Justice and Security, D.M. Van Weel, during the Dutch minister’s official visit to Ghana.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the agreement builds on the Accra Call to Action and seeks to deepen international cooperation in the fight against illicit drug networks and drug markets.

He said Ghana and the Netherlands are committed to providing global leadership in addressing the growing drug problem, which continues to threaten young people, public health, the rule of law and human rights.

“We are confident that genuine and reliable international collaboration will eliminate drug markets flooding our countries with cocaine, synthetics and criminal money,” Mr Ablakwa said in a post on Facebook.

The Foreign Affairs Minister expressed appreciation to the Dutch minister for his visit and described him as a friend of Ghana.

The new agreement is expected to strengthen collaboration between the two countries in disrupting illicit drug networks and addressing the criminal activities and financial flows associated with the drug trade.
