The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has reached an agreement with the Ministry of Transport to increase transport fares by 8% from Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The decision was taken after a meeting between the Union and the Ministry on Tuesday, September 22, following weeks of discussions over the proposed fare adjustment.
The GPRTU had initially called for a 30% increase, citing the financial challenges facing commercial transport operators and the need to improve the earnings of drivers.
However, the Union eventually agreed to a lower adjustment after the government indicated that measures were being considered to reduce petroleum product prices.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, the GPRTU’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said the Union had been firm on its initial demand but was willing to reach a compromise after the discussions.
“We were pushing for 30% and not coming down. But then during the meeting, the Minister also came in that the President has given some directive and that hopefully we will have some more reduction on petroleum products,” he said.
Mr Amoah said the government had initially proposed that fares should remain unchanged, but the Union argued that maintaining the existing rates would put further pressure on drivers and transport operators.
He said the two sides eventually settled on an 8% increase as a compromise.
“At the close of the meeting, we all came up with an agreement that we will come up with 8% increment which will take effect on Saturday, September 26,” he added.
The Union is currently finalising the new fare structure and is expected to communicate the revised fares to its members before the implementation date.
