Ghana booked their place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup despite suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match on Saturday night.
The Black Stars entered the encounter at Philadelphia Stadium knowing qualification for the knockout stage was within reach after collecting four points from their opening two matches. While their unbeaten run came to an end, Carlos Queiroz’s men achieved their main objective of progressing beyond the group stage.
Croatia took the lead in the 30th minute when midfielder Petar Sučić found space inside the Ghana penalty area and calmly finished to give the Europeans the advantage. The goal ended Ghana’s hopes of recording a historic third consecutive group-stage clean sheet.
Seeking a response, Queiroz made key changes after the break, introducing Kojo Peprah Oppong and Abdul Fatawu as the Black Stars looked to increase their attacking threat.
The substitutions paid off in the 72nd minute when defender Derrick Luckassen rose highest to power home the equaliser, sending the Ghanaian supporters inside the stadium into celebration.
However, Croatia would have the final say. Nikola Vlašić struck late in the game to restore his side’s lead and secure all three points.
Despite the defeat, Ghana’s qualification hopes were never seriously threatened, with the Black Stars finishing among the teams advancing to the expanded tournament’s knockout phase.
The result means both Ghana and Croatia progress from Group L, with the Black Stars now turning their attention to the Round of 32 as they continue their quest for a memorable World Cup campaign.
