The Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced that traffic on the stretch from the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange to Kaneshie First Light along the Darkuman-Kaneshie Highway will soon be disrupted as work begins on the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
Although the Mayor did not disclose the exact date for the start of the works, he said motorists and commuters should prepare for changes to traffic flow along the busy stretch.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3News in August, Mr Allotey explained that ongoing GARID works have also affected plans to carry out maintenance on the Kaneshie Footbridge.
He said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) cannot undertake major works on the road and the footbridge until the GARID project at the Accra Academy Senior High School section of the highway is completed.
Mr Allotey appealed to motorists and commuters to cooperate with the AMA when the traffic disruptions begin. He said additional traffic task forces would be deployed to manage the situation, direct motorists and help reduce congestion.
The GARID project has become a major priority following the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra on June 29, leaving several communities severely affected.
The project is expected to improve drainage infrastructure across the capital and strengthen the city’s ability to manage heavy rainfall. Experts believe its completion could significantly reduce the impact of flooding in Accra during future rainstorms.
Motorists who regularly use the Obetsebi Lamptey–Kaneshie corridor are therefore being urged to plan their journeys ahead and exercise patience as the works get underway.
