The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding that the government explain how it intends to finance the temporary GH¢2 per litre reduction in diesel prices, raising concerns about the sustainability and transparency of the intervention.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, August 5, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, questioned the source of funding for the relief announced by President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Aboagye called on the government to disclose the specific fuel margins, levies or taxes being adjusted to support the policy, as well as the expected revenue implications.
“We therefore put the following questions to the government: which specific margins, levies or taxes are being reduced to finance the two cedis diesel relief and what is the total revenue loss?” he said.
He further asked whether the measure was accounted for in the 2026 Budget and what expenditure adjustments would be made to offset any revenue shortfall resulting from the intervention.
The NPP also wants assurances that the reduction in diesel prices will lead to lower transport fares and a corresponding decline in the prices of essential goods.
Mr. Aboagye additionally sought clarification on the status of the existing GH¢1 per litre fuel levy, asking whether it would remain in force throughout the one-month relief period and whether consumers who had already borne the cost of the levy would receive any form of refund.
The concerns come after President John Dramani Mahama directed a temporary GH¢2 per litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel to cushion consumers against rising fuel costs.
The measure took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and will remain in place for one month unless the government decides to extend or review it. The reduction applies only to diesel, with no corresponding relief announced for petrol.
