Accra Airport Records 8.7% Growth in Passenger Traffic Despite January Slowdown

Passenger arrivals at Accra’s main international airport saw a notable increase at the start of 2026, reflecting a steady rebound in travel demand.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s March 2026 Monetary Policy Report, arrivals rose by 8.7 percent year-on-year to 110,087 in January 2026, up from 101,237 recorded during the same period in 2025. The figures suggest that international travel to Ghana continues to recover gradually.

However, the upward trend was not sustained on a month-on-month basis. Passenger arrivals through the airport and land borders fell by 18.9 percent compared to December 2025, pointing to a typical slowdown after the festive season’s surge in travel activity.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s ports also recorded growth on an annual basis, driven by increased trade volumes. Combined container traffic at the Tema and Takoradi ports rose by 13.6 percent year-on-year, reaching 74,508 in January 2026, compared to 65,594 in January 2025.

Similar to the aviation sector, port activity dipped when compared to the previous month. Container traffic declined by 9.8 percent from the 82,624 recorded in December 2025, indicating a cooling in trade activity at the beginning of the year.

Overall, the data paints a mixed picture of Ghana’s transport and trade sectors. While both air travel and port operations show resilience over the past year, short-term declines suggest a seasonal adjustment following heightened end-of-year economic activity.
