Carlos Queiroz will remain in charge of the Black Stars after reaching an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to extend his stay as head coach.
The GFA announced the decision on Wednesday night, confirming that the Portuguese tactician will lead Ghana into the next phase of the team’s programme, beginning with preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,” the association said in a statement.
Queiroz was initially appointed in April on a four-month contract as a replacement for Otto Addo, with the mandate to prepare and lead Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Under his guidance, the Black Stars progressed from Group L after beating Panama, drawing with England and losing to Croatia. However, Ghana’s campaign ended in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
His initial contract expired after the tournament, but discussions involving the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz have now resulted in an agreement for him to continue in the role.
“Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window,” the GFA added.
The 73-year-old brings a wealth of international experience to the Black Stars, having previously managed Portugal, Iran, South Africa and Colombia. He has also worked with Real Madrid and Manchester United during his coaching career.
The GFA believes his experience and familiarity with the current Black Stars squad make him the right man to continue leading the team.
Details of the duration of Queiroz’s new contract are yet to be made public, with the GFA saying an official announcement will be made soon.
