NDC Claims Provisional Two-Thirds Majority in Parliament

Parliament House of Ghana

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared a significant victory in the parliamentary elections, claiming they have secured 185 constituencies, which would give them a commanding two-thirds majority in the next parliament, even before the Electoral Commission finalizes and announces the official results.

Describing this achievement as historic, NDC General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey expressed elation at the party’s performance, noting that they have won constituencies they had never managed to capture in previous competitive elections.

“The green wave sweeping across the country has led to the NDC winning seats we’ve never held since 1996. This reflects the special place the NDC holds in the hearts of Ghanaians,” Kwetey said. He highlighted notable wins in the Greater Accra Region, including Ayawaso Central, Okaikoi South, Tema West, and Dome Kwabenya.

In the Central Region, the NDC also celebrated capturing constituencies such as Awutu Senya East, Assin Central, and others, which had remained out of reach in previous elections. The Western Region saw the NDC secure seats like Sekondi, Kwesimintsim, Takoradi, and Tarkwa Nsuaem, while Bono and Ahafo Regions recorded gains in Sunyani East, Sunyani West, and Asutifi North.

Gains in the Ashanti Region and Beyond

In the traditionally NPP-dominated Ashanti Region, the NDC made surprising inroads, winning Adansi Asokwa, Ahafo Ano South East, and Obuasi East. Kwetey emphasized that this unprecedented success underscored the widespread support for the NDC across the country.

Regional Performance Overview

Kwetey outlined the provisional breakdown of the NDC’s parliamentary gains, noting that they won all 18 seats in the Volta Region, 15 out of 15 in the Upper East Region, and 11 in the Upper West Region. Additionally, the NDC took six of seven seats in the Savannah Region, 11 out of 18 in the Northern Region, and 15 out of 17 in the Western Region.

He also reported the party’s success in Greater Accra, securing 27 out of 34 seats, with hopes of capturing one more. Other regions saw similar progress, with 11 out of 12 seats in the Bono Region, 18 out of 23 in the Central Region, and 10 seats in Bono East. The NDC also won one seat in Western North and eight in the Ashanti Region.

A Commitment to Responsible Leadership

Fiifi Kwetey assured Ghanaians that the NDC’s parliamentary majority would serve as a responsible leadership bloc, prioritizing the nation’s best interests. He called on party agents in areas with disputed results to remain calm, avoid violence, and diligently monitor the collation of results using pink sheets.
