Weija Paediatric Hospital Opening Delayed Over Procurement Disputes, Ministry Explains

The Ministry of Health has explained that delays in opening the Weija Paediatric Hospital are due to procurement irregularities and unresolved contractual disputes, following protests by residents demanding immediate access to the facility.

The 120-bed hospital, which was fully completed and furnished in early 2025, is expected to play a critical role in paediatric healthcare. It is designed to serve as a major referral centre, reducing pressure on existing hospitals while improving care for critically ill children in the Weija-Gbawe area and nearby communities.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, frustrated residents took to the premises of the hospital to protest the prolonged delay, urging the government to commission the facility without further setbacks.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, it was revealed that although the project funded by the World Bank and initiated in 2023 was scheduled for completion by December 2025, progress was disrupted after concerns were raised by the funding partner.

According to the Ministry, the World Bank flagged cases of “misprocurement,” including claims that some medical equipment had been priced at up to 11 times their actual cost. These concerns led to the withholding of outstanding payments.

The situation has been further complicated by the contractor’s refusal to grant access to the facility until all financial and contractual issues are fully resolved.

Despite the setbacks, the Ministry says it remains committed to resolving the impasse. Officials indicate that engagements are ongoing with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the hospital is commissioned as soon as possible.

The Ministry also acknowledged the urgent need for the facility, especially in providing specialised care for children, and appealed to the public to remain calm as efforts continue to bring the hospital into operation.
