Reliable energy crucial for Africa’s industrial transformation – Jinapor

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, says Africa’s dream of becoming an industrial powerhouse will largely depend on the continent’s ability to build reliable, affordable, and integrated energy systems.

Speaking at the 3rd Africa Energy Technology Conference held in Accra on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Mr Jinapor stressed that energy remains the foundation for economic growth, industrialisation, innovation, and job creation across the continent.

According to him, Africa has the potential to move beyond exporting raw materials and instead focus on value addition through industrial development, technology, and strategic investments in the energy sector.

“With our abundant natural resources, growing population, and expanding markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Africa has every opportunity to become a global industrial powerhouse,” he stated.

He, however, noted that achieving this vision would require bold leadership, stronger regional cooperation, and sustained long-term investment in energy infrastructure.

Mr Jinapor also highlighted Ghana’s ongoing efforts to improve energy security and accelerate the country’s transition to cleaner and more resilient sources of power.

He explained that government initiatives currently underway include the expansion of renewable energy projects, battery storage systems, mini-grid electrification, gas-to-power modernisation, and preparations toward the development of nuclear energy.

The Energy Minister added that strategic investments in the power sector would not only improve electricity access across Africa but also support industrial growth and strengthen the competitiveness of African economies on the global stage.
