The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in collaboration with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, has announced plans to rename its national headquarters in honour of the party’s founder and former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, as part of activities marking his legacy.
The initiative will also include the unveiling of a bust of the late statesman. The events are scheduled for Monday, June 22, 2026, which coincides with what would have been his 79th birthday.
The commemorative programme is themed “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy” and is aimed at celebrating Rawlings’ role in Ghana’s political transformation and democratic development.
According to a statement signed by the NDC Deputy National Communication Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the naming of the headquarters and the bust unveiling will take place at 9:00 a.m.
“The first event of the day will be the naming of the party headquarters after Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings and the unveiling of his bust at 9 am,” the statement said.
The ceremony is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, who will address party members and invited guests, alongside other senior figures of the NDC.
Later in the day, a second event will be held at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The programme will feature a lecture and exhibition focused on the life and legacy of the former president.
Renowned lawyer and academic, Tsatsu Tsikata, is expected to deliver the keynote address. Other speakers include Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, former Minister for Local Government and current Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and former Minister for Information and National Security, Kofi Totobi Quakyi.
The statement added that the events are open to the public, including party supporters, cadres, and well-wishers, who are invited to join in honouring the memory of the late founder.
The day’s activities will be held under the theme “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”
