Nana Ama Bonsu I to Be Introduced to Asanteman Council as New Asantehemaa on July 9

The Asante Kingdom is set to usher in a new era of traditional leadership as Nana Ama Bonsu I is officially introduced to the Asanteman Council as the new Asantehemaa (Queenmother) on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

Her nomination was made by the Manhyia Royal Family under the leadership of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in accordance with the customs and traditions of Asanteman.

The introduction to the Asanteman Council will mark the formal assumption of one of the most respected and influential traditional offices in the Asante Kingdom.

Nana Ama Bonsu I succeeds the late Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, the biological sister of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III inherited the position from their mother, the late Queen Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who served as Asantehemaa until her passing in 2016.

The position of Asantehemaa has remained vacant since the death of Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III in 2025.

The office of the Asantehemaa plays a vital role in the governance and cultural life of the Asante Kingdom. Beyond serving as a key adviser to the Asantehene on matters of succession, governance and tradition, the Queenmother is also responsible for safeguarding the customs and heritage of Asanteman.

Nana Ama Bonsu I is also expected to continue the longstanding role of advocating for the welfare of women and children, supporting conflict resolution and promoting unity across the kingdom.

Traditional leaders, dignitaries and members of the royal family gathered for her nomination ceremony, reaffirming their commitment to preserving the rich customs, traditions and institutions of the Asante Kingdom.

Her appointment fills one of the kingdom’s most significant traditional leadership positions and is expected to strengthen the enduring leadership structure of Asanteman.
