John Jinapor Orders GRIDCo CEO to Step Aside as Nationwide Energy Audit Begins

In the aftermath of the devastating fire at the Akosombo power control centre, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside pending investigations into the incident.

The directive was made public by the Minister for Information, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, April 26.

The fire, which broke out on April 23, 2026, caused a significant disruption to Ghana’s power supply, removing between 720 and nearly 1,000 megawatts from the national grid. The impact has been substantial, forcing authorities to suspend electricity exports while focusing on stabilising domestic supply.

In response to the crisis, government has also announced a nationwide audit of all energy infrastructure. The exercise, set to begin on Monday, April 27, is aimed at identifying vulnerabilities within the system and preventing future occurrences.

The ripple effects of the incident have extended beyond GRIDCo. A major shake-up has also been confirmed within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region, where widespread outages affected homes, businesses, and industries following the Akosombo disruption.

As pressure mounts to restore stability and accountability within the energy sector, Minister Jinapor is expected to address the nation at a scheduled press briefing at 2pm on Monday, April 27, where further details on the situation and government’s response will be outlined.
