Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz says he is ready to resign from his position if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) believes his departure will help resolve the country’s football problems.
The Portuguese coach made the comments after the Black Stars suffered a painful 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Ghana appeared to be in control after taking a two-goal lead, but The Gambia staged a stunning comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to hand the Black Stars their second consecutive defeat in Group C.
The result has increased pressure on Queiroz, who was reappointed by the GFA earlier this month after leading Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Queiroz was asked about his future following Ghana’s poor start to the qualifying campaign.
“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” he said.
The defeat leaves Ghana without a point after two matches. The Black Stars began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering another setback at home against The Gambia.
Ghana’s latest result will raise further concerns, particularly after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and is now facing another difficult qualifying campaign.
Queiroz had called for an attacking approach ahead of Tuesday’s game, urging his players to dominate possession and play with a positive mindset.
However, surrendering a two-goal advantage at home has left Ghana with a difficult task in the remaining fixtures.
The GFA will now have to decide on Queiroz’s future as the Black Stars look to recover from their disappointing start and keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON alive.
