Gas Supply Fault Triggers Power Outages Across Parts of Ghana

A technical fault at the Ghana National Gas Company’s processing plant has disrupted gas supply to thermal power plants, leading to power outages in parts of the country.

In a joint statement issued on April 15, 2026, the Ghana National Gas Company and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) confirmed that the disruption was caused by the failure of a critical component within the plant’s operational system.

According to the statement, the problem originated from the complete breakdown of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller connected to the Heat Medium System (HMS), a key part of the plant’s operations. The failure significantly affected the facility’s ability to function effectively.

Initial assessments indicate that the damaged component cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced entirely, raising concerns about short-term gas supply to power generators.

The situation forced an emergency shutdown of the processing plant, leading to a temporary reduction in gas supply to thermal power plants and, consequently, electricity supply challenges in some areas.

“This unforeseen development has necessitated an emergency shutdown of the plant, leading to a temporary curtailment of gas supply to thermal power plants. Consequently, this has resulted in power supply disruptions in some parts of the country,” the statement noted.

Despite the setback, both companies have assured the public that efforts are underway to restore operations. Engineers are currently working to install a replacement system and fast-track the recovery process.

They added that steps to resume operations are expected to begin within the day, subject to final technical checks, as stakeholders work to stabilise power supply nationwide.
