Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the ongoing FIFA World Cup will be the last of his remarkable international career, bringing an end to a journey that has spanned more than two decades on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking during the tournament, the Portugal captain said he has thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the competition and has no plans of featuring in another World Cup.
“I am enjoying this World Cup, the fans and the people. And it’s going to be my last World Cup for sure. The decision is made,” Ronaldo said.
The 41-year-old, who has represented Portugal in multiple World Cups and won numerous individual and team honours throughout his career, said he is content with his decision as he prepares to bring the curtain down on one of football’s greatest international careers.
Ronaldo also shared a light-hearted story about an encounter with an Argentine flight attendant, highlighting the friendly rivalry between Portuguese and Argentine football supporters.
“On a flight, I knew one of the flight attendants was Argentine just by the way he looked at me. I told him, ‘Look, I know you’re Argentinian. You looked at me and looked away quickly… you don’t like me! But my wife is Argentine, don’t worry,’” he recalled with a smile.
As Portugal continue their campaign, Ronaldo’s confirmation means every appearance he makes for his country at this World Cup will carry added significance, with fans around the world eager to witness the final chapter of one of football’s most iconic careers.
