The Government of Ghana will introduce a contra flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) from Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
The initiative, being implemented through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), is aimed at improving public transport and reducing congestion during peak hours.
The contra flow system will operate from 6am to 9am in the morning and 4pm to 8pm in the evening.
The affected corridors are the Amasaman-Accra, Adenta-Accra and Kasoa-Accra corridors, which have been identified as priority routes because of the high volume of commuters travelling to and from the CBD during peak periods.
Under the arrangement, selected sections of the corridors will be temporarily configured to give authorised Ayalolo BRT buses priority movement in the designated contra flow lanes.
Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be allowed to use the designated BRT lanes.
According to the Ministry, the intervention is expected to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo services, reduce journey times, ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD and encourage greater use of mass public transportation.
It is also expected to reduce pressure from the high volume of private vehicles and improve overall urban mobility within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
The MTTD will provide traffic control and enforcement support at strategic locations and major intersections along the affected corridors.
Government has therefore urged motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected routes to cooperate with traffic officers and support the intervention.
Management of Ayalolo BRT is scheduled to hold a press briefing on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 10am to provide further details on the implementation.
The government says it will continue engaging transport operators, road users, local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the initiative improves mobility while maintaining road safety.
