Africa World Airlines (AWA) has expanded its fleet with the addition of a 102-seat Embraer E190 as the airline moves to increase capacity and strengthen air connectivity within Ghana and across West Africa.
The aircraft was unveiled at Kotoka International Airport in Accra as part of AWA’s broader fleet expansion plans. The airline says the E190 is the first of several aircraft it intends to acquire over the next year.
The new aircraft represents a significant shift from the 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 jets that have long supported AWA’s domestic and regional operations. With 102 seats, the E190 gives the airline more than twice the passenger capacity of its smaller regional jets while allowing it to serve routes that may not yet have sufficient demand for larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320.
Speaking at the unveiling, Managing Director of the World Trade Centre, Yvonne Botchey, delivered remarks on behalf of AWA founder and chairman, Togbe Afede XIV.
She quoted Togbe Afede as saying the airline’s ambitions extend beyond Ghana’s domestic market, noting that “Africa World does not intend to restrict itself to domestic operations.”
He added that the new aircraft was “the first of several that we intend to acquire over the next year” as AWA seeks to contribute to improved connectivity across Africa.
AWA has previously indicated plans to restore services to destinations such as Abidjan while exploring routes to Freetown, Monrovia, Conakry, Banjul and Dakar.
The airline’s expansion comes as Ghana seeks to strengthen Accra’s position as a regional aviation hub. Better direct connections between West African capitals could reduce travel times and provide passengers with alternatives to routing through hubs outside the sub-region.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie welcomed the aircraft’s arrival, describing it as “a symbol of progress, partnerships and possibilities of sustainable growth.”
She said the theme of the launch, “Expanding Horizon, Elevating West African Connectivity,” reflected the importance of improving Ghana’s links with neighbouring countries and supporting tourism and other economic activities.
Beyond tourism, stronger regional air connections could support trade, investment and business travel, particularly as Ghana hosts the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, however, urged domestic airlines to ensure that the benefits of government support are reflected in passenger fares.
He referenced the government’s decision to waive duties on aircraft parts and appealed to AWA and other domestic carriers to consider how the relief could benefit travellers.
“Considering the recent announcement by His Excellency that all the duties on parts of domestic airlines will now be waived, we want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, Africa World Airlines, to also look at their affairs and also let it reflect on the Ghanaian travellers,” he said.
The larger E190 could help AWA reduce its cost per seat on routes where passenger demand is strong enough to fill the additional capacity. However, expanding the fleet also comes with higher operating costs if passenger numbers fail to keep pace.
Industry reports suggest AWA could eventually operate up to 10 E190 aircraft within 18 to 24 months, although the pace of the expansion will depend on passenger demand, aircraft utilisation and the performance of the first aircraft.
For AWA, which began commercial operations in September 2012, the E190 marks a new phase in its growth strategy.
The immediate challenge will be to turn the additional aircraft capacity into sustainable regional routes, increased flight frequencies and greater passenger choice.
For Ghana, the broader test will be whether the expansion contributes to stronger regional connectivity while helping to make air travel more accessible to passengers.
