Ex-President Akufo-Addo Directs Former Appointees to Remain Available for Accountability
The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has revealed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo has instructed his past appointees to remain available for any accountability processes following the conclusion of his administration.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, February 18, Ahiagbah emphasized the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
“We the NPP have no record of running away; we’ll be here,” he asserted, reinforcing the party’s stance on responding to accountability calls.
His remarks come amid growing demands from the public for transparency as Ghana transitions into a new political administration.
Accountability and Political Transition
Ahiagbah contrasted the NPP’s approach with that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that some NDC officials evaded accountability in the past.
“We’ll deal with the issues here. It was the NDC members who ran away. My own sister, Sedinam Tamakloe, disappeared. She was tried in absentia, but she ought to be here. Our party has no history of our officials fleeing from accountability,” he stated.
Ken Ofori-Atta’s Case and the OSP’s Position
Until recently, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive. However, his lawyers clarified that he had informed the Chief of Staff about his medical condition and his plans to seek treatment abroad while remaining available when needed.
The OSP later stated that Ofori-Atta had been declared a fugitive due to his alleged reluctance to appear before investigators.
NPP’s Future Outlook and 2028 Elections
While reaffirming the party’s commitment to accountability, Ahiagbah highlighted the NPP’s primary focus on preparing for the 2028 general elections.
“Our preoccupation is how we get our party situated and contest the 2028 election. Matters to do with accountability—our people will be here to answer the questions,” he assured.
He further noted that Akufo-Addo’s directive reflects a firm commitment to accountability. “There’s an effective commitment right from the former President himself. He has given a directive to ensure that our people are available to do that,” Ahiagbah disclosed.
Defending the Akufo-Addo Administration’s Legacy
Defending the record of the Akufo-Addo administration, Ahiagbah expressed confidence that history would judge their tenure favorably.
“We came to do the best we can. And I believe that when the dust settles, Ghana will see what we have done for the eight years,” he concluded.
As the political landscape evolves, the NPP remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency while strategically positioning itself for the future.
