Banks’ Recapitalisation Will Spur Business AndEconomic Growth, ADB MD

The Managing Director of Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC, Edward Ato Sarpong, has commended the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Government of Ghana for their commitment to strengthening the country’s financial system, describing the achievement of all 23 banks meeting their regulatory capital requirements as an important milestone in building a more stable, resilient, and confidence-driven banking industry.

The development, announced by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and reported in the media, represents an encouraging signal for Ghana’s banking sector and its capacity to support economic growth, facilitate investment, promote financial inclusion, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

According to the ADB MD, the milestone provides an opportunity to recognise the importance of sound economic management, effective regulatory supervision, prudent financial practices, and the collective responsibility of financial institutions to maintain strong capital positions.

He emphasised that a well-capitalised banking sector is essential to the country’s economic aspirations, particularly as Ghana seeks to strengthen private-sector participation, expand access to credit, promote enterprise development, and create sustainable employment opportunities.

Strong Banks Don’t Happen by Chance

Mr. Sarpong noted that the resilience of any banking system does not happen by chance but must be deliberately built and continuously sustained through disciplined financial management, effective governance, strong regulatory oversight, responsible risk-taking, and sound institutional leadership.

He observed that capital strength is not merely a regulatory obligation but an important foundation for public confidence, financial stability, and the ability of banks to serve businesses, households and the wider economy.

Edward Ato Sarpong commended the central bank for its supervisory responsibilities and acknowledged the importance of a supportive macroeconomic policy environment in enabling financial institutions to operate sustainably.

He maintained that Ghana’s banking sector must remain forward-looking, adapting to changing economic conditions and emerging risks while preserving the confidence of depositors, investors, and the general public.

A Shared Responsibility for a Stronger Future of the Financial Sector

The ADB MD further called for sustained collaboration among BoG, government, banks, investors, and other financial sector stakeholders to consolidate the gains made.

He noted that the progress achieved provides an opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s reputation as a destination for investment and responsible financial intermediation.

Mr. Sarpong acknowledged that continued success would require consistent policy implementation, sound institutional governance, and a collective commitment to sustainable financial sector development.

A stronger banking sector must ultimately translate into a stronger Ghana, Edward Ato Sarpong concluded.
