The government is planning to establish a second National Theatre in Kumasi as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s cultural and creative arts infrastructure.
Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, disclosed this during the Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026.
She explained, however, that the government’s immediate priority is to complete an existing theatre and Centre for National Culture project in the Ashanti Region before considering the construction of an entirely new facility.
“We plan to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi,” Ms Gomashie said.
According to the Minister, she recently toured theatre and Centre for National Culture facilities in the Ashanti Region and subsequently proposed to Cabinet that the government focus on completing the project that had already been started.
She said Cabinet had approved the proposal, paving the way for work on the existing facility to resume and be completed.
“I took a tour of the Ashanti Region’s theatre and Centre for National Culture spaces. I have suggested to Cabinet that instead of starting a new one, we focus on finishing what has been started,” she said.
Ms Gomashie said the approach was aimed at ensuring that government resources were used efficiently by completing ongoing projects before committing funds to new ones.
“And Cabinet is in approval of that suggestion. So that is what is going to happen, and if the opportunity comes, we start a new one,” she added.
The Minister also announced plans to rehabilitate the existing National Theatre in Accra as part of efforts to improve the country’s cultural infrastructure.
The proposed second National Theatre in Kumasi is expected to provide additional space for performances, cultural activities and creative production, while improving access to major cultural facilities in the Ashanti Region.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader plans to strengthen Ghana’s tourism, culture and creative arts sectors through investment in infrastructure and the creation of more platforms for cultural expression.
