President Mahama Seeks Update on Election-Related Deaths, Promises Justice and Compensation

President John Dramani Mahama has directed his Executive Secretary to formally request an update from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the status of investigations into deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.

Speaking at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving event held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10, Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

He emphasized the importance of uncovering the circumstances surrounding these incidents and holding those responsible accountable. The President stated that the requested update from the police would serve as a foundation for further investigations.

“This is not the first time we are witnessing such tragedies. In 2020, eight of our citizens lost their lives. If these incidents are left unresolved and justice is denied, it only fosters a culture of impunity. That is why, as a party, we are determined to investigate these killings, identify the causes, and take appropriate actions to prevent their recurrence,” he said.

President Mahama also pledged to ensure fair compensation for the victims’ families. He noted that once the newly appointed Attorney General assumes office, an assessment will be conducted to determine appropriate reparations for those affected.

“The Attorney General, upon taking office, will be tasked with evaluating and recommending fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who lost their lives,” he assured.

The President’s remarks underscore his administration’s commitment to justice and accountability, with a focus on preventing future election-related violence and supporting the families impacted by these tragedies.
